Scotland’s Jonathan Rowson is one of the most talented young players on the world chess scene. A string of impressive recent results include a silver medal at the 1997 European Junior Championship and first place in the 1997 London International, where he earned his first grandmaster norm. His second grandmaster norm came in the British League the following year. He is already an experienced chess writer, but this work is Rowson’s first major book. He is currently studying Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Oxford University.

Un libro ricchissimo di inventiva, fantasia e originalità. Cosa un po’ strana in un libro di teoria, ma non tanto se l’argomento è una delle difese più anticonformiste che esistano, e se l’autore è un giovane MI capace di interpretarne con stupefacente libertà di pensiero sia gli aspetti tecnici che quelli, diciamo così, "filosofici". Qualche esempio? La curiosa denominazione ("Delroy") del tipico pedone passato del B. sulla colonna "d"; i titoli dei vari capitoli, a prima vista un po’ bizzarri ma perfettamente inerenti al tema trattato ("The anchor", "The cake and the cookie", "The eager lady", "Hydra", "A pint of Carlsberg"…); le gustose citazioni, i proverbi, le massime filosofiche. Una nota personale: gioco la Grò nfeld da trent’anni, ne ho studiato montagne di teoria, ma non ne avevo mai apprezzato certe sfumature come leggendo questo eccellente "read & play book". E concordo con l’autore (in disaccordo con quanto sostiene Dvoretskij in "Opening preparation"): per giocare la Grò nfeld si può contare sull’intelligenza, non necessariamente su una buona memoria…
