Leonid Stein
Master of Risk Strategy
by Eduard Gufeld and Efim Lazarev

GRANDMASTER OF SPEED, GENIUS, AND RAW, CRUSHING WWF-STYLE TALENT!

Leonid Stein, Soviet chess grand- master and champion, believed in ”correct” chess. However, when faced with drifting into a draw against a weaker player or a lost game, he believed in RISK! His unrestrained imagination and creativity elevated his play beyond mere mortals. It was another genius, Bobby Fischer, who boldly challenged Stein to a match to be held after the Havana chess olympiad.

A most likely future world champion, and definitely a candidate, he unleashed his unbridled talent over the mightiest of chess players, but tragically, died in his thirties.

Stein’s amazing ingenuity in attack and sacrifice is revealed in these dramatically annotated games.

Besides the extensive biographical section, his family photo album is opened for all to see his warmth and strength, and the mental prowess of the 3-times USSR champion.

Written by two who knew him well, the authors have analyzed the career of a super grandmaster for whom chess life moved much too slowlyl Grandmaster Gufeld now lives in Los Angeles. Master Lazarev resides in Kiev, the Ukraine.
