CHESSBASE MAGAZINE 83
August 2001
The main database, which appears
as "83CBM" in your database window, this time contains 1811 games. Of
these 506 are annotated. In this issue of ChessBase Magazine we have two
multimedia reports. The first is a supplement to our CBM 79 multimedia report,
which took a traditional look at the Brain Games World Championship, which took
place in London last November. It was a visitor´s impression, a journalist
attending the event and filming everything he was allowed to film at the
Hammersmith site. In the current issue we have a completely different report on
that historic match. Our special correspondent, Almira Skripchenko-Lautier, who
by the way is the newly crowned European Women's Champion, was also in London at
the time. But in addition to the championship itself she also had access to the
camp of the challenger. The reason is simple: Almira is married to French GM
Joel Lautier, and Joel was one of Vladimir Kramnik's three seconds during the
match
CHESSBASE MAGAZINE 82
June 2001
This contains 1226 games and
seven database texts – an introductory text with hints on how to access the
database, two texts featuring surveys on the opening sectors reviewed by
Christopher Lutz and Igor Stohl as well as four tournament texts.
The strongest classical tournament was the one in Linares. This year, the two
world champions Vladimir Kramnik and Vishy Anand were absent – the FIDE world
champion allegedly had other obligations, and Kramnik was, as it transpired, not
satisfied with the financial offer. But Gary Kasparov did play, and the
dethroned world champion outdistanced the other five participants by three
points (7,5/10). It was a case of one first place, five last places

The current issue of ChessBase
Magazine consists of two CDs. One is the regular magazine CD, the second
contains a new players encyclopedia which replaces the one you received with
your ChessBase 8.0 program. The encyclopedia has been substantially improved and
enhanced. There are around 20,000 new player entries and more than 1,100 new
pictures, including a lot of recent shots of the top players. The main database
("81 CBM") 1428 games and 12 database texts, nine of which are
tournament reports. The largest set of games (258) are those from the FIDE
knock-out world championship. Of these 96 are annotated, amongst others also by
the winner Vishy Anand

The ChessBase Magazine 80 contains
the main body of 1262 games and five database reports. There are many strong
tournaments, the men´s Olympiad in Istanbul and the Braingame and FIDE World
Championships in London and Delhi/Teheran. The two world championships were held
in competition with each other. In the Braingames world championship there were
only two decisive games, both won by Kramnik, who also managed to find an
impregnable defence against Kasparov's white onslaught. The FIDE world
championship in Delhi and Teheran ended in victory for the favourite Vishy Anand,
who thus becomes Asia's first chess world champion

the arduous journey to Shenyang, to make a video report on the World Cup -- and
to take part in the womens´s section there. The CD offers more than 7300 games.

ChessBase Magazine 78 can
offer its readers two world champions. When Vladimir Kramnik explained how to
win against the Junior program during a video interview shown here in our
multimedia report on the Dortmund Sparkassen Chess Meeting, he, of course, could
not have known that he would defeat Kasparov shortly thereafter. He explains his
strategy against the computer in a humorous way. "Well, I just wanted to
bring it into time trouble, and then it surely would overlook a piece, and it
really turned out that way...". Alexander Khalifman is the official FIDE
world champion. Against Junior, he was basically lost after 18 moves. He tells
us what he was thinking and how he was able to save the game. And he too shows
that he has a lot of humour. In addition, we have a lot more exciting interviews
and clips from Dortmund for you, and a great deal of chess of course: about 1800
games from which 524 are annotated. As always, there are the categories theory (openings),
middlegame and endgame. Furthermore, Fritz-forum with reports on the computer
world championship and the shuffle-chess event with Advanced Knaak. In the
Magazine, amongst others, Matthias Wuellenweber presents the new ChessBase 8.0
program

Israeli League with his camera and has given us his video impressions. Minister
Nathan Sharansky often visits the event and is to be seen in some of the
pictures, Boris Avrukh explains how he was able to draw his game against
Kasparov. The videos are embedded in an instructive report by Dimitry Tyomkin.
The other multimedia report is by Frederic Friedel and shows Fritz playing at
the Frankfurt Chess Classics. There is an extensive report on the subject, with
pictures, games and analysis of the computer games by Thomas Luther.

The multimedias database is dedicated to a single subject: Fritz at the Dutch
Championship. The event and the participation of the computer created a
world-wide stir. While Fritz tried its luck against top GMs the controversy
raged, with both advocated and opponents visiting the tournament site in
Rotterdam. Frederic Friedel was present to discuss the issues with them on
video. In his thought-provoking multimedia report you will find interviews with
tournament director Gert Gijssen, with the most vocal opponents Tim Krabbé and
Gert Ligtering, with proponent Jaap van den Herik, and with the players Loek van
Wely and Jeroen Piket

Frederic Friedel has prepared for you "historical pictures" of
Kasparov´s and Karpov´s joint analysis of their pawn ending from the
tournament in Las Palmas 1996, Grandmaster Karsten Müller commenting their
post-mortem in the style of a sports reporter. The combinated access to the game
through video clips and Chessbase database allows for a fascinating insight. A
second multimedia database is dedicated to an event which has almost become a
tradition by now: a city competition between Vinius and Berlin. Apart from the
games there are also clips from an exhibition match between the president of the
Lithuanian parliament, Landsbergis, and the German minister of the interior,
Schily. Furthermore the database includes the 35 games of Eduardas Rozentalis'
simul and an extensive report written by Harald Fietz. Available from 29.05.00
